New Perennials 2008 - Dry conditions

All living plants need water, but there are some that require less than others. These new beauties are ideal for gardens that receive little moisture.

‘Hello Yellow’ butterfly milkweed
Asclepias tuberosa ‘Hello Yellow’
Golden-yellow blooms. Provides food for monarch butterfly caterpillars and nectar for adults. A drought tolerant perennial. Grows 37.5-50 cm (15-20 in.) tall.
‘Carolina Moonlight’ false indigo
Baptisa ‘Carolina Moonlight’
Elegant spikes of creamy yellow blooms grace tidy blue green foliage in early summer. Long-blooming and tough, this plant is a dazzling addition to the native plant palette. Drought tolerant. Grows to 90 cm (3 ft.) tall in full sun to partial shade. Photo courtesy North Creek Nurseries.
‘Coconut Lime’ coneflower
Echinacea purpurea ‘Coconut Lime’
The first white double flowering Echinacea has a compact habit that sports over 20 blooms per plant. Well branched, sturdy flower stems are perfect for cutting. The plant blooms for two to three months. It thrives in intense heat and humidity. Full sun. Grows 50 cm (20 in.) tall and spreads 60cm (24 in.).
Summer SkyTM coneflower
Echinacea ‘Katie Saul’
The warm orange and bright pink combine perfectly to make this a very unusual flower with an excellent bi-colour appearance. Grows 75-90 cm (30-35 in.) tall.
‘Purity’ coneflower
Echinacea ‘Purity’
‘Purity’ will sprout over 25 11.5 cm (4.5 in.) blooms on a one-year-old plant. Remarkably strong, well-branched 45-60 cm (18-24 in.) tall plants produce pristine white flowers of superb quality with bright orange cones. This plant is wonderful for the border or cutting gardens. Blooms all summer and into fall. Full sun.
‘Tiki Torch’ coneflower
Echinacea ‘Tiki Torch’
The darkest orange coneflower explodes with massive 11.5 cm (4.5 in.) flowers with wide petals. ‘Tiki Torch’ retains its intense colour for weeks rather than days. The spicy-scented blooms sit atop strong and upright 90 cm (36 in.) stems. Full sun.
‘Virgin’ coneflower
Echinacea purpurea ‘Virgin’
This variety of coneflower truly has a superior flowering performance. Large, full flowers are pure white with a green cone and a double row of petals. It has a strong upright habit that requires no staking. Enjoy its sweet fragrance from mid-summer to early fall. ‘Virgin’ coneflower prefers full sun to partial shade and will grow to a height of 60 cm (24 in.). This is also a wonderful cut flower, fresh or dried, is deer resistant and attracts butterflies.
‘City Garden’ coneflower
Rudbeckia fulgida ‘City Garden’
The flowers and blooming habit are similar to the popular R. ‘Goldsturm’, but ‘City Garden’ is significantly shorter. Grows 37.5-50 cm (15-20 in.) tall.
‘Henry Eilers’ quilled coneflower
Rudbeckia submentosa ‘Henry Eilers’
Charming blooms of unusual gold-quilled petals are highlighted by chocolate brown button centres. Good for cut flowers. A narrow upright growth habit makes this a great specimen for the back of the border. Full sun. Grows 120 cm (48 in.) tall and spreads 60 cm (24 in.) wide.
